British Tomato Week 17th - 23rd May

We are celebrating British Tomato Week 17th May – 23rd May
Isle of Wight tomato crops are grown in glasshouses, protected from the cold but able to soak up the sunshine of the past few weeks. In times of increasing concerns about food security, that has to have a lot going for it. The problem is that four out of five tomatoes now eaten in the UK are imported. Is it a coincidence that people complain that tomatoes don't taste like they used to? We don't think so.
On the other hand Isle of Wight fruit has never tasted better, with a fantastic range now available, from super sweet cherries and baby plums beefsteaks, both on and off the vine.
It's not often that something which tastes good is also good for you. Tomatoes contain lots of health protecting nutrients - vitamins, minerals, flavonoids and natural pigments, not least lycopene, the stuff that makes ripe tomatoes red. Research has shown that fresh, ripe, home-grown tomatoes contain much higher levels of lycopene than imported long-life types
The tomato stall will be attending the following farmers markets this weekend;
Notting Hill, Pimlico, Wimbledon, Ealing, Twickenham, Parliament Hill, Marylebone, Queenspark, Islington, Blackheath, Barnes, Broadway and Borough Market
We also have arranged to have the Demo Kitchen Set up at Borough Market in the Jubilee Market area on Friday 21st and Saturday the 22nd May.
We want to showcase many of the fantastic recipes that can be created using the best flavourful tomatoes grown by us on the Isle of Wight. On hand during the two days, Tomato Stall staff will be there to chat to customers about the tomatoes available to buy within the market.
Also on site on the Friday and Saturday at Borough a member of the Fifteen Restaurant Bar Team will be mixing up Isle of Wight Tomato Bloody Marys
