The First IOW Tomatoes of the Year
Thursday 11 March 2010
This weekend will see the first Isle of Wight grown tomatoes of 2010 at farmers markets in London and Winchester. Theses tomatoes have been grown in our glasshouses on the island using 100% natural light, where the environment is maintaned by our on-site, Combined Heat and Power plant (CHP). The plant generates electricity and the waste heat and co2 are then used to create the ideal growing conditions for tomatoes. This is a very green process, located on site so there is no need to transport power from the mainland; excess power is then sold back to the national grid. We believe the carbon footprint of these tomatoes is less than importing tomatoes from abroad as the only transportation of the tomatoes takes place on the short trip from the Island to London direct to the farmers markets. Other lines will follow in the coming weeks, depending on the sunshine levels.
We are planning to introduce some new products for the coming season. They are still in the early development stages but with the arrival of the new season tomatoes they will hopefully appear at farmers' markets very soon...
